The dark knight rises is a film which specialises in the genre of action and thriller, it also has other genres related around it such as crime fiction, comic book and drama. This is stereotypical for a Hollywood film as they tend to involve a lot of action and fast moving scenes where they can spend a lot of money on. The dark knight rises was released on the 20th of July 2012. Looking at the same time period, I have found that seven other films had also been released that very same day; however all of these were only shown in key cities and not saturated as the dark knight rises. Only one was distributed by 20th fox century and the rest were unknown, low budget productions which did not try and competed with the films genre or audience as they all varied away from action. The reason why it is such a hit is because of the high list actors who are involved which will attract their fan base also. Because it is already part of a franchise and there has been past bat man films, it is predicated that it will make more money than the last.
The target audience it would appeal to a wide audience of marvel lovers, and anyone who reads the previous comics or has seen the films. Espislly directed towards guys as geeks would also be stereotypically linked to batman. However because of the rating of a 12A that the BBFC have given it also opens this film up to younger fans that are below the age of 12 and can watch it with an adult. This seems appropriate because it is a “moderate violence" according to them. The equivalent is a PG13 in America. The dark knight rises was show in IMAX, 2D subtitles/captions for people with hearing loss, Audio Description for people with sight loss, digital 2D and 35mm. It was also shown in many cinemas, such as ODEON, IMAX and wide release. IMAX Corporation and Warner Bros. Pictures today announced that The Dark Knight Rises has passed the $100 million global box office mark in 557 IMAX theatres worldwide after its 7th week of release. As of Sept. 3, 2012, the film reached a total of $65.1 million from 332 IMAX screens domestically and $37.3 million from 225 IMAX screens internationally. These figures include box office receipts from China, which began playing the film on Aug. 27 in 75 IMAX theatres.
There were releases of various posters of characters who are main in the movie as a teaser campaign. It allowed the audience to have an idea is in the film and what character they are playing.  Only using a long shot of each character dressed in their famous clothing which related to bat man, they created a few dozen posters which were very dark and gloomy looking. Wired and Empire then “leaked” mysterious CIA documents about a missing Russian nuclear scientist named Dr. Leonid Pavel (believed to be actor Alon Aboutboul). These documents will explode many rumours in respects to The Dark Knight Rises storyline, as well as how this missing nuclear scientist is related to Bane’s schemes. On the release date there was also an official website with a new IMAX poster and extensive production notes that fill in some of the story details.
For the trailer, MTV got some lucky Batman fans to check out the brand-new trailer for over the weekend, which then resulted to Apple having the first theatrical trailer for the entire world to see. In the first part of the trailer they have tried to replicate in a way a scene from the dark knight, which vaguely shows batman, but we are aware of his presence due to his Bruce’s voice. Cleverly using scenes which will trick the audience into information they do not yet know has been used through the making of the trailer as they use fast acting cuts, from a speech from Harvey to bat man fighting. The audience are shocked to see Bruce walking with a stick as he appears to be old, which we are confused about because in the next cut we see Bruce and Selina dancing, and a close up of her whispering into his ear which gives us mixed signals as to what is happening. It is now where we are introduced to the special effects and fast moving cuts of the battle and the batbmoible in action. They have promoted the main starts and their scenes in the trailer focusing on the main problem of Bain trying to destroy Bat man, with full use off special effects and action.
Using new media would be a very important factor to consider when promoting the film, as they are a giant Hollywood blockbuster, they have gone all out to make this work by setting up a website with various links to twitter, youtube, facebook pages also giving them interactions with fellow bat man lovers by becoming a member of the website and getting news letters sent via email, which they can then explores the online games as well as the PSP  controller and other objects which have been bat man customised especially for this film. There is also a free app which you could download on your iPhone which is very handy for teenagers and a younger audience. They have also teamed up with a very large brand of energy drink “Mountain Dew” which they know teenagers of their target audience purchase, for a competition. By doing this they have created a social awareness of publicly promoting the film so everyone is aware. Also using the famous Empire magazine, in association to win two cinema tickets, but also giving out secondary prices like batman merch, USB, t shirts, DVD players and other goodies.  ‘The studio and Chrysler are holding a contest where users can take assets from the website “Imported from Gotham City”, and re-edit them into a new 25-second TV spot, and the winner will receive a trip to NYC to attend the red carpet premiere.  Christopher Nolan will choose the winner, although there’s no guarantee that the spot will actually air on television.  Additionally, your TV spot must not only promote TDKR, but also “Chrysler brands”.  I assume the brands are cars that get destroyed as Batman tries to save Gotham City.’ Was another example of a competition.
A clever strategy of using a synergy to their advantage is showing the trailer of the dark knight rises right before the avenger’s movie. DC and Marvel are the biggest comic corporations on the cinema scene. Because of this relationship they have also played the dark knight before iron man, and also the inception before iron man 2. Also by using social media there has been a standing ovation for the film before it was released as twitter also got involved and #TDKR was trending. There has also been a TV pot has been released by Warner Bros., showing some never-before seen footage and some humour. Here are the slots they appeared on.

the dark knight rises

The dark knight rises has a specialised franchise in which has been made into sequals of many other batman films. It begain with batman reutrns, then the dark knight and now the dark knight rises. This is typical of an american production as it feeds of other exsisting ideas which come from the marvel movies. The producers must have spent a lot of money in buying the rights to the films plot and idea as it was not an orginal one, this is used a lot in american films as they have the money to splash about. Because they also know that marvel films have been a hit before, they are sure to garuentee a profit bale return form their audience. christian nolan had also directed the previous batman films, which means that there is a safey net for their audience to almost garuenteee to watch the latest film. Because hardcore batman fans would have seen the first two, they would also want to see the last one because of its sequal and follow the story. The first movie batman begins spent a less $150 million on it and in return got $374,218,673. the dark knight then rised up to $185 million and had a return with $1,004,558,444. And the latest one the dark knight rises cost $250–300 million and had a return of $1,081,041,287. we can see a trend as each movie has been made, more money has been spent and also the return has increased. This insures that this movie would be successful and attract a wide audience. MUSIC: Music in the dark knight rises also help contribute to the success of the film as a world famous composer Hans Zimmer had been confirmed that he would be retuning to do the music for this film. This is because James Newton Howard originally did it for Bat man begins and The dark knight, however turned this down as he thought Zimmer would be better suited. Zimmer said he wanted to go into a completely different direction for Bane's theme tune. Zimmer choice voices in a most interesting way as he wanted thousands and hundred of them so he tweeted, asking people who wanted to be a part of it, where the fans could also be involved and part of the music creation. Costume: This is part of the low paid section. the costume designer was Lindy Hemming. The hardest part was to make the Batsuit, which consisted of 110 separate pieces, each of which had to be replicated dozens of times over the course of the production. One of the main things which made batman movies so compelling is their tone of plausibility. The final version of the Bat takes its design cues from the Harrier Jump Jet, Bell Boeing V-22 Osprey and the Boeing AH-64 Apache. The Bat's shape and size was a major challenge to film as the practical effects over computer-generated imagery. To actually make it fly, it had to be supported by wires, which were suspended from cranes and helicopters. When designing the batcave set, they found the idea of flooding it and having Batman's equipment rise from the water. Another set was designed for this as an underground prison, a rough-hewn labyrinthine of stone cells that was 120 foot. The prison had to be filmed in Jodhpur, India, chosen because the "forbidding landscape added to the desolation".
